COWELL, Eva

1868 - 1941

As Eva Ayerst, she was born at Marylebone, London on 10 April 1868, daughter of William Edward Ayerst, a surgeon, and his wife Mary Read née Tennant. In 1881, a 13 year old living at Ulcombe Street, Ulcombe, Kent with her parents, 57 year old William, born Chatham, Kent and 47 year old Mary, born in India, and her 14 year old sister Annette and they kept nine indoor servants. She married in 1897, sculptor George James Cowell [q.v.] and worked under the name of Eva Cowell. A portrait painter who exhibited at Liverpool Walker Art Gallery, New Gallery, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Academy and the Society of Women Artists, in 1897 from Maida Vale, London, in 1901 from Saxmundham, in 1911 Leiston and in 1926 from Aldeburgh, all in Suffolk. In 1939 a widow living at apartments at 52 Lee Road, Aldeburgh and she died at Amersham, Buckinghamshire in 1941, aged 73.
