DE PINTO, Rufus

1904 - 1976

Rufus John Noel de Pinto was born at Paddington, London on 19 December 1904, son of Lionel de Pinto (1856-12 March 1932), a merchant in Mexican goods, and his second wife Adeline Edith Lois née Langston (1874-28 May 1934), who married at Blean, Kent in 1901, and they made their home at 25 Lancaster Gate Terrace, Paddington. Rufus studied at both the Central School of Arts and Crafts and later under William Coldstream (1908-1987) at the Slade School of Fine Art. In 1937 he was living at Porchester Square, Bayswater but by 1939, an artist decorator, living at 11 French Street, Sunbury-on-Thames with Cynthia De Pinto (20 April 1907-1948), an artist writer. During the Second World War he spent time in Liverpool prison as a conscientious objector being discharged from the army in 1942 as a private. He exhibited at the Kensington Artists Show at Leighton House, Holland Park Road in 1955, a watercolour 'Kensington Square' and in 1967 at Ansdell Gallery, Kensington several oil, watercolour, and crayon. He married secondly at Cambridge in 1956, Olive Wanda Abotomey (1909-1991), who was born in Australia, and they later opened an art gallery at Doggetts, Queen Street, Stradbroke, Suffolk where they also held weekend residential art courses, Rufus also had a studio at 49 Kelso Place, London. Rufus John Noel de Pinto died at Stradbroke in 1976. His picture 'Piccadilly' was offered at auction by Keys of Aylsham, Norfolk in 2013.
