GARRARD, Matthew C. C.

Born at Upminster, Essex in 1960, son of George Garrard and his wife Josephine H. née Brooks, who married at Upminster in 1953. After a career in journalism and public relations, Matthew Garrard became a full-time professional artist in 1996 but has been based in Suffolk since 1982. The East Coast features prominently in the pastel landscapes and portraits which form a large part of his work. His distinctive style is typified by vigorous use of light and colour to capture the mood and character of a subject. His original work has been featured regularly in exhibitions at the Southold Gallery in Suffolk, and his work was selected to appear in the Laing exhibition two years running, winning the 'Guest’s Choice' he also exhibits his work in a number of galleries throughout East Anglia, the Home Counties, and with the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists. In 1995 a series of prints reproduced from his paintings were issued and, following their success, a further set of six designs was launched in 1996. These comprise four images from Southwold, and one each from Lowestoft and Walberswick. He married in married in Deben, Suffolk in 1986, Julia A. H. Levis and secondly in Waveney, Suffolk in 2000, Dr Isobel F. McKenzie and lived at 71 High Street, Wangford, Beccles, Suffolk but now lives and works from Dipping Well, Sunset Lane, Southam, Gloucestershire.
