HASTED, Violet Grace Moor

1873 - 1964

Violet Grace Moor Hasted was born in India on 29 March 1873 and baptised at Masulipatnam, now named Machilipatnam, Madras on 5 May 1873, daughter of Col. John Ord Hasted (24 July 1835-21 September 1916) of the Royal Madras Engineers, and his wife Eliza Maria Anderson née Sherman (21 October 1838-25 December 1928), who married at Madras on 9 July 1859, her father John had been born at Sicklesmere in Suffolk. In 1881, as an 8-year-old, Violet was being educated by a teacher/governess at Hadleigh Road, Sproughton, near Ipswich together with two of her siblings, Magdalen Lizzie 14 and Henry Roger George 4. Ten years later Violet was living at 1 Dynevor Road, Bedford with her parents, 55-year-old John and 53-year-old Eliza and two siblings Annie Georgina 29 and Henry 14 but by 1901 they had moved to Brooke House, The Street, Rickinghall, Suffolk and they were still there in 1911 and where her father died in 1916. Her mother, who was born at Madras, died at Green Close, Great Bealings, Woodbridge, Suffolk on Christmas Day 1928 and from where Violet had taken up nursing. The family were friends with the local rector Revd Cecil Blyth and his wife Anne Blyth and their daughter Margaret Blyth who, like Violet, were also amateur artists. In 1939, Violet was an A.R.P. nurse, living at The Rosary, Hasketon, Woodbridge where she lived until her death. Violet Grace Moor Hasted died at the Ipswich & East Suffolk Hospital, Anglesea Road, Ipswich on 8 March 1964, and like her mother was aged 90. She was unmarried.
