Karen Keable

As Karen Sarah Johnston, she was born at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk on 12 May 1966, daughter of Roger Johnston and his wife Rita née Allen and granddaughter of Guernsey artist Louis Le Ray (born 1894). Karen was educated at Great Yarmouth Grammar School and, as an adult, travelled the world living in Singapore, Bangkok, Australia, and Norway during which time she developed a love of drawing and painting, undertaking portrait commissions and running art classes. On her return to Britain, she studied at Grays School of Art at Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland which helped to develop her own distinctive style. Karen married at Great Yarmouth in 1987, Kevin Bryant Patrick Keable (born March 1963) and in 1999 they moved to Southwold seafront in Suffolk where Karen realised her natural ability to capture the sea in her paintings. She usually paints every day, mostly in her studio and in acrylic on canvas but experiments in other media. Her paintings are in private collections in Britain, Europe, Malaysia, and America, including two paintings held in the House of Lords Art Collection. She exhibits at the Southwold Gallery, Southwold; Thompson's Gallery, Aldeburgh; Hunter Gallery, Long Melford and Chrome Gallery, Norwich. Her exhibitions including solo shows ‘Quintessential Suffolk’ at Southwold Town Hall, and at the House of Lords, London ‘Best of Britain’ Exhibition; Mall Galleries, London; Peter Hedley Gallery, Dorset; Art in the Park, Croxton Park and Roger Hickman's, Norwich. From 1998 she had kept a guest house on North Parade, Southwold and Karen and her husband are directors of Southwold Gallery, formerly the Garden Gallery owned by Mary Gundry.
