As Joy D. Tuckwell she was born in Ipswich in 1962, her mother's maiden name was Crowe and she grew up in Worlingworth, near Eye. Among the very first intake of girls at Woodbridge School in Suffolk, the former all boys school and she studied at the Ipswich Art School in High Street with a Diploma in Art and Design, before proceeding to Canterbury University. Halfway through her studies her grandmother left her the then considerable sum of 1,000 which she used to travel, trekking across Africa, Turkey and the USA before returning home, her travels fired her creative imagination in her painting which led to the Bentwaters base commander appointing Joy as artist in residence. She obtained a position as a personal assistant to the district works officer at RAF Bentwaters and married in 1988, American, Gary M. Pirkle. By the time of the closure of the base about 1991 she was expecting twins, Kenneth and Loretta but unfortunately the marriage didn't last and once her now three children were at school, Joy returned to Suffolk College to complete her BA (Hons) Fine Art degree course. Joy Pirkle has an enviable reputation as a portrait painter having immortalised people like Frankie Dettori, Karen Pickering and David Sheepshanks and has exhibited at Corn Exchange Gallery, Ipswich; Digby GAllery, Colochester; Ancient House Gallery, Ipswich and at Stowhealth, Stowmarket. Now she is passing on her skills to Suffolk's school children at Farlingaye High School in Woodbridge. She exhibits at Stowhealth centre, Violet Hill Road, Stowmarket.
