RYLAND, Christopher

1951 - 2022

Henry Christopher L. Ryland was born at Eastbourne, Sussex on 2 February 1951, elder son of Henry Peter Ryland (5 July 1911-21 October 1993), a solicitor, and his wife Betty May Larom (5 December 1919-5 January 2006), daughter of Frederick Gouldthorpe Larom, who married at the Savoy Chapel, Westminster, London in October 1949. Known as Christopher Ryland, he studied at the University of London and Goldsmiths College 1968-1972 and married at Lewisham, London in 1977, Pamela D. Newell. A member of 395 Association, a group of community artists in S.E. London 1973-1975, and an associate lecturer in art and design at Southwark Adult Education 1981-1993. Since the early 1980s he specialised in botanical painting and in 1995 was elected a member the Society of Botanical Artists and had several solo exhibitions in London and East Anglia including at the John Russell Gallery in Ipswich and the Wildlife Art Gallery in Lavenham. His paintings have featured in many publications, winning awards including the President's Award at the annual exhibition of the Society of British Artists at Westminster in 2001 and the St Cuthbert's Mill Award in 2007. A painter and printmaker and lecturer in Art and Design he lived at 35 Gainsborough Street, Sudbury, Suffolk from where he also taught a variety of art courses. His exhibits also included at the 'Visions of Sudbury' show at St Peter's church, Sudbury in 2007 'The Valley Walk', in 2009 a watercolour 'Flowers and Simon's Gateway' and in 2013 a watercolour 'Valley Walk in Winter'. Christopher Ryland died at the West Suffolk Hospital on 1 December 2022, aged 71.
