CURRY, Harry Sidney

1871 - 1950

Harry Sidney Curry was born at Tynemouth, Northumberland on 10 November 1871, twin with sister Mary Ellen and fifth son, of George Curry (1840-31 December 1899), a timber merchant, and his wife Mary Saunders, second daughter of John Saunders of Monkton, who married at St Nicholas Church, Monkton, Pembroke on 22 January 1865. In 1881, Harry was a 9-year-old, living at 43 Percy Gardens, Tynemouth with his 42-year-old father George and George's 36-year-old sister Isabella, with six siblings, Robert Percy 13, Edwin Stanley 11, Arthur Samuel 10, Mary Helen 9, William Oscar 7 and Hilda May 4, all born at Tynemouth, his 40-year-old mother was away from home. Harry married at Clifton Road Congregational Church, Brighton on 7 June 1900, Lily Marian Bath Goodman (16 October 1870-4 November 1959) of Dyke Road, Brighton and in 1911, a 39-year-old architect living at 14 Earls Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent with his 40-year-old wife and two children, 3-year-old Alfred, born Cullercoats, Northumberland and 1 year old Alan, born Tunbridge Wells, Kent. A landscape and interior artist and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1929-1949, exhibiting in 1932 from Beacon Hill, Stone Lodge Lane, Ipswich, six watercolours 'An Old Barn, Charsfield, Suffolk', 'Trees near Cranehill Farm', 'Rain on the Hills, Staffordshire', 'Loch Kinnard, Aberdeenshire', 'Farm Buildings at Charsfield' and 'Near Gippeswyk Hall, Ipswich' and regularly exhibited six pictures but in 1935, exhibited from Derby Lodge, 222 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich 'Hanson Gorge, Dovedale', 'Roughton Mill, Norfolk', 'The Deserted Cottages', 'A Staffordshire Farm Loft', 'Near Cromer' and 'Evening on the Devon Hills' but only exhibited four watercolours in 1937, 'A Landscape in Suffolk', 'In Beresford Dale, Derbyshire', 'Beeston Priory, Norfolk' and 'Farm Buildings at Tuddenham'. Also, a member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle in 1932 from Ipswich and exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 1939, a retired architect living at 'Bracken Fell', Southbank, Cuckfield, Sussex with his wife. Harry Sidney Curry died at 'Chatsworth', Sea Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk on 23 September 1950, aged 78.
