CUTTING, Margaret

1878 - 1965

As Annie Margaret Simpson, but known as Maggie, she was born at Stonham Aspal, Suffolk on 4 April 1878, second child of George Henry Simpson (1855-27 April 1915), a farmer of 180 acres, and his wife Annie Elizabeth née Sparrow (27 November 1853-28 August 1937), stepdaughter of Samuel Simpson of The Elms, Stonham, who married at Stonham Aspal on 14 June 1876. In 1881, Margaret was a 3-year-old, living at ‘The Laurels’ Stonham Aspal with her parents, 26-year-old George and 27-year-old Ann, and her two siblings Frank George 1 and a newly born infant boy [Alec Edward], all born at Stonham Aspal, another elder sibling Henry Charles was staying with his aunt at the Horse & Groom, Station Road, Stowmarket. In 1901, Margaret was a 22-year-old, living at The Laurels, Crowfield Road, Stonham Aspal with her parents and three more siblings, Winifred Mary 17, Walter Hugh 16 and Herbert Russell 9, another daughter Eva, who was born in 1885, was a boarder at Manor House School in Ipswich. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1903-1910 & 1930-1932 and as Miss A. Margaret Simpson she exhibited from The Laurels in 1903, four paintings 'Nature', 'Fanningford Farm Lane', 'Lilac' and 'Honeysuckle'. In 1909 she restored the hatchment of Penelope Lee Acton, which still hangs in Stonham Aspal church, and decorated a number of stoneware drainpipes with floral designs for use as stick stands. She married at Stonham Aspal in 1910, Henry Miles Cutting (1875-1919), a draper’s manager, and in 1911 a 32-year-old wife, living at Front Street, Mendlesham, Suffolk with her 35-year-old husband Henry, who was a member of the A & M Cutting Ltd., grocers & drapers, at Mendlesham and Stonham. Henry, known as Harry, was killed in France during the First World War. As Mrs Margaret Cutting, she re-joined the Ipswich Art Club 1930-1932 exhibiting from The Cottage, Stonham Aspal, Suffolk in 1930, two watercolours 'A Corner of the Rockery' and 'Gladioli', two in 1931 'A Spring Garden' and 'Autumn Tints' and from The Clock House, Stonham in 1932, watercolours ‘Dahlias’ and ‘Lilac Time’. In 1939, a widowed housekeeper & nurse, living at The Cottage, Stonham Aspal, near Ipswich. Annie Margaret Cutting was of Stonham Aspal when she died at 19 Montague Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk on 23 May 1965, aged 87.
