BLAKESLEY, Alicia

1861 - 1939

Alicia Blakesley was born at The Vicarage House, Ware, Hertfordshire in 1861 and baptised on 7 April 1861, youngest daughter of the ten children of Revd Joseph Williams Blakesley (1808-18 April 1885), vicar of Ware, and his wife Margaret Wilson Holmes (1823-28 July 1880), daughter of Revd Thomas Holmes of Brooke Hall, Norfolk, who married at Southwold, Suffolk on 21 August 1845. In 1871, Alicia was a 10-year-old living at Ware Street Vicarage, Ware with her parents, 63-year-old Joseph and 48-year-old Margaret and her nine siblings, George 24, Margaret 22, Philip 20, John 18, William 16, Elizabeth 14, Mary 12, Arthur 7 and Edmund 2, all born at Ware and each son had the second name of Holmes. Her father was promoted as Dean of Lincoln in 1872 and Alicia studied at Lincoln School of Art and where in 1878, she was a prize winner. Her mother died at Lincoln on 28 July 1880, aged 57 and in 1881 they were living at 23 Fopstone Road, Kensington, London and her father died at The Deanery, Lincoln on 18 April 1885, aged 77. A member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1897-1912, exhibiting three oil painting from 15 Stanley Crescent, Kensington, London in 1898, 'Les Autelets-Sark', 'Sunset-Sark' and 'View of Little Sark', in 1901 'Cottage Garden' and in 1906 'Dutch Barge' and 'Dutch Boats'. She also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1893 'The Back Door' and at the Royal Academy. In 1901, she was living 'on own means' at Kensington with two of her unmarried sisters, Margaret, and Mary, from where she exhibited at the Newbury Art Society in 1902 'Boats in Harbour' and 'The Old Mill'. Alicia Blakesley died at 'Chestnuts', Aston Tirrold, Berkshire on 25 February 1939, aged 78, she was unmarried.
