HILL, Mary Arabella
Mary Arabella Hill was born at Rochford, Essex in 1862 and baptised on 2 April 1862, youngest child of Robert Raby Hill (1828-18 January 1888), a solicitor's articled clerk, and his wife Maria née Furner (1831-), who married at Rochford on 19 March 1854. Shortly after Mary's birth her father qualified as a solicitor and moved to practice at Ipswich. In 1871, Mary was a 9-year-old, living at 30 St Nicholas Street, Ipswich with her parents, 42-year-old Robert and 39-year-old Maria, with three siblings Ann Maria 16, Louse Fanny 15 and Francis John 13, all born at Ipswich and the family were still there in 1881. Her father died at 30 St Nicholas Street, Ipswich on 18 January 1888, aged 59 when his son Francis took over his practice and in 1891 the family were still living at St Nicholas Street. Mary exhibited at the [[Bury St Edmunds [and West Suffolk] Fine Art Society,4385]] in 1882, 'Freston Tower' and was a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1887-1894 and exhibited from 30 St Nicholas Street in 1887, 'Evening at Kesgrave', in 1893 a china plaque 'Flowers', in 1894 she was of Clarkson Street, Ipswich but did not exhibit. Mary married at Wandsworth, London in 1895, 28-year-old Henry Goddard, a tailor's manager, and in 1911, they were living at 3 Curzon Street, Slough, Buckinghamshire, they had one son Richard, born 1896. Mary Arabella Goddard was of Horncroft, Montagu Road, Datchet, Buckinghamshire when she died at Holmcroft Nursing Home, Datchet on 22 December 1937, aged 75.
