BALDOCK, John

1831 - 1905

John Baldock was baptised at Holy Trinity, Tithby-cum-Cropwell Butler, Nottinghamshire on 30 January 1831, son of Joseph Baldock (1802-10 March 1883) and his first wife Mary née Hall (died 1843), who married at Cropwell on 1 November 1827, Joseph married secondly at Boston, Lincolnshire in 1845 his namesake, Hannah Baldock. In 1851, John was a 20-year-old farmer's son, living at Tithby-cum-Cropwell Butler with his 48-year-old father and 31-year-old stepmother Hannah, with three siblings and three stepsiblings. As an army officer serving in India, he married at Bangalore, Madras on 16 April 1863, Susan Willmott (1841-August 1916). In 1881, a 50-year-old army veterinary officer, living at 4 Cyprus Villas, Aldershot, Hampshire with his 37-year-old wife Susan, who was at born Sherbourne, Dorset and their four children, Harry W. 15, born in India, Alice Ada 9 and Mary K. 8, both born in Ireland and Ethel M. 1, born in Devon, another son Charley Blair Baldock (1866-1915) was away at boarding school. By 1888 John Baldock had moved to Airlie House, 101 Christchurch Street, Ipswich with his wife and two of their daughters. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1888-1897 but does not seem to have exhibited. By 1901, when a 70-year-old retired Cavalry Officer, he had moved to 79 St Johns Park, Greenwich, Middlesex with his wife and daughter Ethel. John Baldock died at Sherbourne, Dorset on 13 October 1905.
