AIRY, Arthur Langton
Arthur Langton Airy was born at Kidbrook, Blackheath, Kent on 3 May 1876, youngest and third child and only son of Dr Hubert Airy, MD (14 June 1838–1 June 1903), and his wife Susan Cecilia née Langton (7 November 1837-30 April 1924), youngest daughter of Skiner Zachary Langton of Barrow House, Keswick, who married at St John's, Keswick, Cumbria on 5 June 1872; Arthur was a grandson of Sir George Biddell Airy (1801-1892), Astronomer Royal 1831-1881. Arthur was educated at Eaton House School, Aldeburgh, Suffolk where he was boarding in 1891, after which he studied at Herkomer's Art School at Bushey, Hertfordshire in 1896 and in 1900 was living with his parents at Stoke House, Church Street, Woodbridge, Suffolk. In 1900 he enlisted in the army but in 1903, on the death of his father at Woodbridge, he retired with the rank of lieutenant and later the same year married at Easton, Suffolk, Grace Watson Wood (28 January 1882-30 March 1959), youngest child of Revd William Watson Wood, rector of Easton. In 1911, an 'artist painter' living at South Lodge, Broadwater Road, Worthing, Sussex with his 33-year-old wife and children, Hubert Arthur (1904-1992) and Jack Langton (1906-1970), both born at Battersea, London. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1899-1912, also exhibiting at the Royal Academy. Arthur Langton Airy was living at 'Hillcot', Shakespeare Road, Worthing and on the outbreak of the First World War he re-enlisted in the army, joining the 3rd Northampton Regiment. Arthur Langton Airy was killed in action at the battle of Cuinchy, France on 11 January 1915, and buried in the Le Touret Memorial in France.
