HORTON, Clara Marion
As Clara Marion Schreiber, she was born at Barham, Ipswich, Suffolk on 5 September 1868, daughter of Revd John Edward Lemuel Schreiber (c.1817-4 February 1876) and his wife Lucy Phillipps (1839-2 October 1928), eldest daughter of Charles Phillipps of Claydon, who married at Barham on 14 January 1863. Clare married firstly at Barham Church, on 23 April 1892, Sydney George Horton (1862-23 June 1904), an army officer, and they had two daughters Eileen Clare, born in 1894 and Pleasance Lilian born in 1899. In 1901, a 32-year-old married woman, living at Freshwater Court, Totland, Isle of Wight with her two daughters and kept three indoor staff. Her husband, Sydney Horton, was of Convent House, Claydon, near Ipswich when he died at 1 Barns Street, Ayr, Scotland on 23 June 1904 and Clare married secondly at Claydon Church on 3 June 1905, Major Charles Ross, D.S.O. (10 March 1864-21 December 1930). As Mrs Horton, a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1900-1905 and exhibited from Freshwater Court, Isle of Wight in 1900, a watercolour 'Shakey Bridge, Cafferrylys, N. Wales', two in 1901 'Storm at Freshwater Bay' and 'Totland, Isle of Wight', three in 1902 'A Garden Path, Freshwater', 'Outward Bound' and 'Freshwater Bay from Faningford', and from Claydon, Suffolk in 1903 four works 'Minehead Quay', 'Near Greenaleigh', 'A Calm Day, Minehead' and 'From North Hill, Minehead'. In 1911, a 40[sic] year old, living at The Pines, Park Road, Camberley, Surrey with her 47-year-old husband Charles Ross, a Lt. Col. at the General Staff College, who was born in Bengal, India, and her 11-year-old daughter Pleasance. In 1939, Clara Marion Ross was a widow, living at Green Gables, The Square, Freshwater, Isle of Wight with a chauffeuse companion and a cook, and where she died on 17 November 1949, aged 81.
