VINCENT, Dorothy
Harriet Annie Vincent was born at Firfields, Chertsey, Surrey on 29 November 1869, third of the five daughters and a younger son, of Joseph Vincent (1841-1 May 1896), a farmer of 511 acres, and his wife Ellen née Sneezum (1843-1914), who married at Camberwell, Surrey in 1865. In 1871, 1-year-old Harriet Annie was living at Firfields with her parents, 29-year-old Joseph, a farmer, and 27-year-old Ellen, with siblings Ellen Kenzia 4, Sarah Emma 3, Joseph Charles 2 and newly born Martha Elizabeth, all born at Chertsey. By 1891, Harriet was living at Simple Marsh Farm, Crouch Oak, Chertsey with her parents, 49-year-old Joseph and 48-year-old Ellen, and siblings Ellen 24, Sarah 23, Martha 20 with Catherine 18 and Percy 15. Her father died at Simple Marsh Farm on 1 May 1896, aged 54, and in 1901 his 58-year-old widow Ellen, was farming at at 'Emmsworth', Crockford Park Road, Addlestone, Chertsey with her daughters 31-year-old Harriet, an artist, and 30-year-old Martha, a teacher of music. As 'Miss Dorothy Vincent' a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1901-1902, exhibiting from 'Emmsworth', Addlestone in 1901, six oils 'Roses', 'Early Spring', 'Dahlias', 'Azaleas', 'Still Life' and 'Chrysanthemums', this last picture had also been exhibited by Miss D. Vincent of Addlestone, at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1893. By 1911, Harriet and her mother had moved to 19 Brighton Road, Addlestone, both of 'independent means'. Her mother died at Chertsey in 1914, aged 70, and Harriet died at Paddington, London in 1938, aged 68, she was unmarried. Why she was listed as Dorothy is a mystery, maybe a pseudonym as there were no Dorothy Vincent's living with the family at Addlestone.
