CHRISTY, Susannah

1859 - 1952

Susannah Christy, was born at Stanford Hall, Stanford Rivers, Ongar, Essex on 4 November 1859, third of the eleven children of David Christy (1824-1908), a farmer, and his wife Jane née Marriage (1832-1906), who married at Chelmsford, Essex on 2 May 1855. In 1871, a pupil at a school at High Street, Lewes, Sussex but ten years later was back at Patching Hall, Broomfield, Chelmsford, Essex with her parents, 57 year old David and 48 year old Jane, with siblings Mary Jane 24, David 23, Edith 21, Richenda 17, Charles Albert 14, Ethel Ann 7 and Grace 4, all born at Broomfield, Essex and in 1901, were still living at Patching Hall. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1903-1906, and exhibited from Patching Hall in 1903 two paintings, 'Low Tide at Woodbridge' and 'Oriental Poppies', she also exhibited at the Baillie Gallery and the Society of Women Artists 1905-1909. After the death of her parents, she and her sister Jane Mary, moved to Attrees Barcombe, Lewes, Sussex where they were living in 1911. In 1939, a member of the W.V.S., living at The Clearing, Chanctonbury, Sussex and she died at West Clayton, Washington, Sussex on 10 April 1952, aged 92, she was unmarried.
