CANTON, Frederick

1847 - 1913

Frederick Canton, was born at 18 Old Bond Street, Westminster, London on 23 October and baptised on 8 December 1847, third child of Alfred George Canton, a surgeon, and his wife Jane Elizabeth née Anderson, who married at Portsea, Hampshire in 1840. In 1861, a 13 year old living at 17 Great Marlborough Street, Golden Square, Westminster with his parents, 45 year old Alfred and 44 year old Jane and his six siblings, William Samuel 17, Charles Barry 14, Jane 9, Jessie 6, Walter 3 and Selina Mary 1, and they retained four indoor servants. In 1871, a 23 year old medical student, still living and Great Marlborough Street and he married at Croydon in 1875, Edith Mary Farmer and took over his father's house where in 1881, a dental surgeon, with his 26 year old wife and their three children, Claude Frederic (1877-1937), Ethel May [Snell} (1878-1940) and Elie Francis (born 1880), they had another son Sydney Anderson Canton born in 1882. By 1901, they had moved to 24 Upper Wimpole Street, Marylebone but by 1907 had retired to East Bergholt, Suffolk. As W. Canton of Tufnells, East Bergholt, Suffolk and F. Canton of 36 Warrington Road, Ipswich, an honorary member of the Ipswich Art Club 1908-1913, but does not seem to have exhibited. He died at Redlands, Warrington Road, Ipswich on 13 December 1913.
