CHANDLER, William Frank

1885 - 1928

William Frank Chandler was born at Caldicott, Monmouthshire on 17 February 1885 and baptised on 7 August 1885, son of Frank Chandler (1855-14 March 1930), a farm bailiff, and his wife Clara née Rymer (8 January 1888-1944), who married at Caldicott in 1883. In 1891, William was a 5-year-old, living at Nine Wells Farm, Catbrook, Trelleck, Penallt, Wales with his parents, 36-year-old Frank and 32-year-old Clara and his three siblings, Charles Henry 7, Edith Florence 3 and Winifred Elizabeth 2, all born in Wales. In 1899, William who was living in Bath, won a scholarship from Bath Forum School to Bath Technical School of Science and Art and in the National Art Awards in 1904, won a prize for his measured drawings. In 1901, William was living at 11 Prospect Place, Bath with his 47-year-old aunt, Sophia Chandler. A student at the Royal Academy Schools and in 1911, a 25-year-old art student, boarding at 50 Pembroke Road, Kensington, London with James Russell, and his family when he exhibited at the Royal Academy. He served in the Artist Rifles during the First World War and the regiment book has some of his drawings from the trenches in France and he worked on a ceiling at the Hague Peace palace, and he also finished off a statue for the Royal Artillery in the Mall in London. William married at Monmouth, Wales in 1918, Lydia Mary Haylock (26 December 1891-29 June 1964), whom he had met at the Royal College of Art, and in 1921 was an art teacher at Ipswich School of Art living at 'Caer Corin', Grove Lane, Ipswich with his 30-year-old wife Lydia Mary, who was born at Forest Gate, London, and their 1-year-old daughter Joan Mary, who was born at Ipswich. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1920-1922 and exhibited from Ipswich School of Art in 1920, ‘A Sussex Barn–Evening’, ‘A Gloucestershire Barn’, ‘Chepstow Castle, Monmouthshire’ and ‘Tintern’. An associate member of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art and an associate and a teacher at the Royal College of Art. William Frank Chandler was of Berwyn House, Llanishen, near Chepstow, Monmouthshire when he died on 15 March 1928 and buried in St Nicholas Church, Trellech. He left a widow, and an executor of his estate was his brother Charles Henry Chandler, a farmer.
