Walter Dexter

Born at Wellingborough, Northamptonshire on 12 June 1876, son of Walter Sothern Dexter, photographic artist, and his wife Emily née Allday, who married at Birmingham in 1875. Educated at Croad's School, Kings Lynn and studied at Birmingham School of Art 1892-1897, Birmingham Royal Society of Artist 1897 and in Holland and Belgium. Elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1905. In 1911, living at Sea Road, Felixstowe with his parents, 62 year old Walter, a hotel proprietor at this seaside resort, and 58 year old Emily and his two siblings, Irving and Ida, his brother Owen [q.v.] was living in London. Art master at Bolton Grammar School 1916-1920 and later held the same position at King Edward VII School, Kings Lynn, Norfolk 1941-1944. He married at Kings Lynn in 1915, Helen Mary Chadwick (28 March 1880-1948). Founder president of King's Lynn Art Club and many of his watercolours were used to illustrate various books published by Methuen. He spent many years travelling in Europe, studying the architecture of the old masters and wrote a series of articles about his travels for the press. Landscape, interior, portrait and still life painter, and illustrator exhibiting at Birmingham Royal Society of Artists, Bruton Galleries, Walker Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Academy 1923-1947, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, from King’s Lynn, Norfolk in 1901 and 1913, from Kensington, London 1904 and from Felixstowe, Suffolk 1909. In 1939 an artist painter & art master, living at Old Toll House, East Winch, Kings Lynn where he died in 1958. A member of the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1902-1955 from Kings Lynn and at their centenary in 1985 two of his works were on show 'A Workshop' oil on canvas and 'Slaughden Quay, Aldeburgh' pencil and watercolour which is illustrated in Dutt's 'Some Literary Associations of East Anglia' (Methuen 1907).
