Dawn Pretty

As Evelyn Dawn Booth, she was born in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, descending from a settler in Africa in 1820, who was brother to John Alexander Gilfillan, the acclaimed Scottish painter, known for his portrait of Robert Burnsís wife, and early depiction of New Zealand culture and landscape. She married Christopher John Pretty (born 1960), son of John Pretty [q.v.] and paints under the name of Dawn Pretty. Dawn received no formal art training but began painting as a small child in a remote farmhouse, with no piped electricity or water, surrounded by mountains and jungle. Initially embarking on a career in music, and representing both Zimbabwe and England in sport and as a teenager she travelled in Europe and America, using her hobby of painting and drawing help fund herself. Painting under the name of Dawn Pretty, she is primarily a figurative and portrait painter in oils, Dawn also uses batik to express colour and vibrancy, a technique acquired in Zimbabwe, and is based at Studio 2, The Cuts Art Centre, 8 New Cut, Halesworth, Suffolk from where she teaches classes in oil, acrylic and watercolour. A member of the Southwold Art Group and has exhibited at Buckenham Galleries, Southwold; The Little Gallery, Halesworth; Spencer Colman Fine Art, London and many other venues and her work is in collections worldwide.
