Barry Tolfree

Born in 1941, son of Cyril Bertram Tolfree (22 January 1915-1990), a tobacconist stocktaker, and his wife Kathleen Mary née Catherine (21 March 1915-1999) who married at Wandsworth in 1938, and in 1939 were living at 12 Cromford Road, Wandsworth. Barry studied at Durham University. He married at Croydon, Surrey in 1968, Vivien M. Hughes and they lived at 17 Wolverton Avenue, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey. After having spent three decades as a writer in advertising, PR and technical journalism, he started painting in 1991. He paints in watercolour or oil and enjoys painting both portraits and places, especially buildings which exhibit the effects of successive layers of history with evidence of alternating periods of human attention and neglect. He lives in Southwold and is a member of the Southwold Art Circle.
