GOWER, Caroline

1813 - 1883

Baptised at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire on 30 June 1813, daughter of Richard Hall Gower (1767-1833), a naval man and ship designer, and his wife Elizabeth (1773-1840), daughter of Commodore Emptage of the Bombay marine, who married in 1803 and lived at Cheshunt but in 1816 moved to Nova Scotia House, Wherstead Road, Ipswich. Of the five daughters and two sons of the family, in 1851 three unmarried sisters were still living at Nova Scotia House, Elizabeth 44, Sarah Rozanna 39 and Caroline 37 and they kept three indoor servants. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1875-1876 and exhibited a 'Clubb's Mill, near Looe, Cornwall' in 1875. She lived at Nova Scotia House until her death in 1883, she was unmarried. Her will is at Suffolk Record Office, Ipswich (HB 54/E28/1).
