STEWART, Gertrude
As Gertrude Hulme, she was born at Stockport, Cheshire on 16 December 1871, third of the six daughters of James Hulme, railway cashier, and his wife Sarah Ann née Armstrong, who married at Manchester in 1862. In 1881, Gertrude was a 9-year-old, living at Brabyns House, Marple, Stockport, Cheshire with her parents, 39-year-old James and 36-year-old Sarah and her five sibling sisters, Ada Lavinia 12, Sarah Anne 11, Ethel Hannah 3, Ellen Florence 2 and a further newly born unnamed daughter, all born at Stockport. Gertrude married at All Saints' Church, Marple, Stockport on 11 August 1909, Dr George Irvine Thompson Stewart (23 February 1873-15 July 1923), M.D., son of Sir David Stewart, of Banchory House, Aberdeen. The couple then came to live at 1a St Edmund's Road, Ipswich and in 1911, Gertrude was a 38-year-old, living at Ipswich with her 38-year-old husband, a school medical officer, her husband died at Ipswich on 15 July 1923, aged 51. In 1939, a widow, still living at 1a St Edmund's Road, Ipswich with a housekeeper. An associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1945-1956 and exhibited from 1a St Edmund's Road, Ipswich in 1946, two petit-point needlework pictures after which she became an Honorary Member. Gertrude Stewart died at St Edmund's Road on 8 December 1956, aged 84 having been a widow living at the same address for over 33 years. She had no children.
