THORP, Elizabeth [Peggy]

1906 - 1959

As Elizabeth Margaret de Moraville, known as Peggy, she was born at Marylebone, London on 29 April 1906, eldest child of John Maximilian Schmidl de Moraville (1863-30 July 1917) and his wife Ilma Charlotte Olga née Behrend (2 March 1872-6 December 1947), who married at London City in 1905 and in 1939 Ilma Charlotte was a widow living at Frethorne House, Wantage, Berkshire. Peggy was educated at St John's School, Collington Avenue, Bexhill and, as Elizabeth Margaret de Moraville, married at St Mary's Church, Streatley, Reading on 2 June 1928, Capt. Sydney Richard Thorp, R.A. (3 January 1898-30 August 1967), who was of Fengate House, Nayland, Suffolk when he died at Bawdsey, Suffolk, Peggy’s friend and bridesmaid Yvonne Ziegler was an accomplished oil painter and introduced her to the art. In 1939, Elizabeth was living at Grove House, Tockington, Thornbury, Gloucestershire with her husband Sydney, secretary to the Gloucester Territorial Army and in 1947 the family moved to Holton Lodge, Halesworth, Suffolk. Peggy was a pupil of David Cox and in 1952 the family moved to The Old Vicarage, Higham St Mary, Suffolk so that Peggy could be near her art master. An artist in oil and a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1949 and she exhibited from Holton Lodge, Holton in 1949, 'Fruit and Wine', in 1950 'Still Life' followed by two in 1951 'Still Life with Pomegranates' and 'Old Studios, Mousehole', in 1952 'Still Life with Fish' and 'A Cornish Cove'. In 1958 she had on show two more, 'Still Life 1957' and 'Ramatuelle, South of France' and was a regular exhibitor up until her death. Elizabeth Margaret Thorp was living at The Old Vicarage, Higham St Mary, Suffolk when she died at the National Hospital, Queen Square, London WC.1 on 1 November 1959, aged 53.
