KEMSLEY, Walter

1915 - 2008

Walter Kemsley was born at Medway, Kent on 7 May 1915, son of Alfred Kemsley (1887-1919), a clerk, and his wife Amy Mary née Newnham (4 June 1888-13 January 1973), who married at Borstal St Matthew, Kent on 2 May 1914. In 1939, Walter was a head newspaper reporter, living at 4 Hill Road, Rochester, Kent with his widowed mother and the Bell family whose son Edwin was a newspaper reporter and later a sub-editor for the Eastern Daily Press in Norwich. Walter married at Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1946, Mary Eve. A member of the Ipswich Art Club and exhibited from 5 Oakroyd Avenue, Dunmow, Essex in 1958, two oil paintings 'Sleeping Child' and 'Orford, Suffolk' and was also a member of the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1947-1988 from Norwich. After moving to Melton, Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1987, in 1990 he exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club, two pictures 'Morning Post' and 'Coal Yard Melton' and from the same address in 1997 'Dunwich Shore' and 'May, near Minsmere', he also exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 2004, at the age of 88, he published a volume of poems 'Painted Words' which includes some of his works which were exhibited at the Royal Academy. Walter Kemsley lived at Pines, Valley Farm Lane, Melton, Woodbridge, Suffolk until 2008, when he retired to Woodbridge Lodge Residential Home, Burkitt Road, Woodbridge and where he died on 3 October 2008.
