HITCHCOCK, Norah

1906 - 1993

As Elsie Norah Oliver, she was born at Devizes, Wiltshire on 24 June 1906, youngest of the three children of John Oliver (10 December 1871-17 April 1962), pharmacist, and his wife Bessie Sarah née Jesty (23 November 1867-17 March 1952), who married at Weymouth, Dorset in 1900 and both lived at 4 Church Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk. In 1911, Elsie was a 4-year-old, living at 37 Market Place, Devizes with her parents, 39-year-old John and 43-year-old Bessie and two siblings, John Osborne 10 and Winifred Mary 8. Norah married at Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1931, Roland William Hitchcock (5 February 1902-29 January 1987) and in 1937 they were living at Mill House, Layham, Suffolk. As Mrs Norah Hitchcock, an associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1963-1974> and exhibited from Mill House, Layham in 1963, an oil painting 'Snow at Belstead', in 1964 two oils 'In the Studio' and 'Water House, Layham' and in 1967 an oil 'Cool Landscape' and was a regular exhibitor, in 1970 showing an oil 'Fantazy' which seems to have been her last. Elsie Norah Hitchcock died at Hunters, 120 High Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk on 24 September 1993.
