As Christobel Joyce Sherwood, she was born at Birdbrook, Halstead, Essex on 23 February 1907, second child of Richard Henry Sherwood (28 April 1864-31 October 1940), a farmer of Birdbrook Hall, and his wife Laura Julia Whitlock (9 March 1870-31 August 1955), daughter of Walter Whitlock of Poole Hall, Great Yeldham, who married at St Andrew's Church, Great Yeldham, Essex on 25 April 1901 and in 1939 were living at 4 Tuddenham Road, Ipswich. In 1911, Christobel was a 4-year-old, living at Birdbrook Hall with her parents, 46-year-old Richard and 41-year-old Laura, with two indoor servants. Christobel married at Ipswich in 1934, Wilfred Henry Underwood (11 January 1906-3 July 1977) and painted under the name of Joyce Underwood. In 1939, Wilfred was a wholesale leather & boot and shoe distributor, living at 61 Valley Road, Ipswich with his wife Christobel, a teacher of dancing. An associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1971-1974+ and exhibited from Copper Beech, 7 Onehouse Lane, Ipswich in 1971, an oil 'Gainsborough Lane, Ipswich' and in 1973 an oil 'Fore Street, Ipswich'. Christobel Joyce Underwood died at Ipswich on 13 March 2006, they had three children Richard, George, and Rosemary, all born at Ipswich.
