ELLIOT, Edward

1850 - 1916

Edward Caselton Elliot was born at Ranworth, Norfolk in 1850, only son of Edward Rising Elliot (1812-26 November 1885), a farmer of 263 acres and 194 acres of marshes, at Ranworth, and his wife Emily née Caselton, who died at Edward’s birth in 1850, when his father Edward married again at Ranworth on 5 November 1853, Elizabeth née Gardiner (1832-). Young Edward was taught drawing by Norfolk artist John Berney Ladbrooke (1803-1879) and later studied at the Royal Academy Schools, a fellow student was Frederick George Cotman and they became friends, making painting tours of Norfolk and Suffolk. In 1871, Edward and his sister Sarah (1842-1915), were lodging at 13 Napier Road, Kensington, London, the home of 27-year-old Edith Osborne, an artist in oil, with whom she may have taught Edward the skills of painting in oils. In 1881, a 30-year-old landscape artist and, together with his sister Sarah, were lodging at Abinger Hammer, Dorking, Surrey, the home of Henry Bowles and his family but on the death of Edward's father in 1885, he returned to Norfolk to take over the 262-acre family farm at Hethersett. A landscape, coastal and figure painter, being elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1884. In 1891, Edward and sister Sarah, were living at White House, Turnpike, Hethersett, Norfolk ‘artist in oils’ but by 1896 he had given up the farm and was an artist living at 26 Marine Parade, with a studio at 9 Commercial Road, Lowestoft, formerly the studio of George Parsons Norman. By 1900, an ‘artist & sculptor’ living at 12 North Parade, Lowestoft with his 58-year-old sister Sarah Elliott, his studio was still in Commercial Road. A member of the Woodpecker Sketch Club, later named the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle, 1885-1910 from Hethersett and Acle, also a member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club 1897-1901, exhibiting from Marine Parade, Lowestoft in 1898 'Breezy June', 'Green Pastures' and 'Happy Days'. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy 1880-1905 and at Birmingham Royal Society of British Artists; Bruton Gallery; Dudley Gallery; Grosvenor Gallery; Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts; Walker Gallery, Liverpool; Manchester City Art Gallery; Royal Society of British Artists and Royal Institute of British Painters. In 1911, Edward, an artist, and Sarah, were living 'on own means', at The Firs, Acle, Norfolk where Sarah died on 15 May 1915, aged 75 and where Edward died on 14 January 1916, aged 65. At the centenary of the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle in 1985 his oil on canvas, 'Portrait of Miss Catherine Maude Nichols' was on display.
