PELLING, Nancie Ruth

1920 - 2008

Nancie Ruth Pelling was born at Wembley, London on 7 May 1920, daughter of Arthur George Pelling (8 April 1871-30 August 1977), a brewer's manager, and his wife Ruth née Gibb (20 August 1871-1 May 1958), who married at Paddington, London in 1902 and in 1921 Arthur was the manager in the bottling department at Tollemache's Brewery in Ipswich living at 24 Fore Street, Ipswich with his wife and daughter Nancie. By 1939 they were living at 'Gippeswych', Pondtail Lane, Horsham, Sussex. Nancie studied at Bromley College of Art and trained at Ipswich School of Art and later became teacher of art at St Felix School, Southwold in Suffolk where she was on the staff for many years and was a co-author of a history of the school in 1998 and illustrated 'Southwold and St Barnabus' (1997). An artist and calligrapher, painting in watercolour, both flowers and landscapes, she was also an illustrator, made architectural drawings, and was a weaver. Nancie first exhibited with the Southwold Art Circle in 1956 and was elected its first president and was a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1977-1985+ and exhibited from Goldcroft, 14 Marlborough Road, Southwold, Suffolk in 1977 two watercolours, 'Suffolk Flint' and 'Honeysuckle' and in 1980 'Fair February'. Nancie Ruth Pelling died at Oaklands House Retirement Home, Reydon, Southwold on 21 June 2008, aged 88, she was unmarried.
