EMENEY, James
As James Emeney, sometimes Emeny, he was baptised at Hadleigh, Suffolk on 27 April 1862, son of John Emeney (1827-21 December 1904), a boot & shoemaker, and his wife Patience née Deeks (1829-1904), who married at Hadleigh on 25 December 1855. In 1881, as Emeny, a 19-year-old unemployed clerk, living at 23 George Street, Hadleigh with his parents, 52-year-old John and 50-year-old Patience, and his sibling, 21-year-old Frederick John. James exhibited at Ipswich Fine Art Club from Hadleigh in 1883, two oils 'Toppesfield Mill, Hadleign' and 'Aldham Church, Suffolk' also a watercolour 'Toppesfield Bridge, Hadleigh' and in 1885 exhibited two oils ‘Love Lane, Hadleigh' and 'Kersey Mill, from the Bridge'. He married at Ipswich in 1894, Martha Matilda Wallis (10 September 1864-1 February 1942), of Twinstead, Essex. In 1901, James was a 39-year-old commercial clerk, living at 29 Christchurch Street, Ipswich with his 37-year-old wife Martha and 5-year-old only child Arthur James but by 1911 they had moved to 81 Foxhall Road, Ipswich. Both father James and son Arthur were still exhibiting at the Ipswich Art Club from 81 Foxhall Road, Ipswich in 1920, James exhibiting three oil paintings, 'The Stour, near Sudbury', 'The Orwell' and 'Near Cornard, Sudbury', in 1923 two oils 'The Golf Links, Showery Weather' and 'The Banks of the Orwell', in 1924 'Cornard near Sudbury', 'Near Nacton' and 'Heath, near Cornard, Sudbury' and in 1925 three oils 'Near Cornard, Sudbury' and 'Cornfields near Hadleigh' plus again 'The Banks of the Orwell'. James Emeney died at 81 Foxhall Road, Ipswich on 17 February 1936, aged 72.
