PITFIELD, Norma

1931 - 2020

Norma Constance Pitfield was born at 104 Blackburn Road, Bolton, Lancashire on 14 October 1931 and baptised at St Peter's Church, Bolton on 13 December 1931, only child of Stanley Pitfield (16 June 1892-4 October 1977), a tobacco cutter & blender, later a radio engineer & retailer, and his wife Margery Annie née Bailey (26 April 1895-1976), who married at Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire in 1920 and in 1939 were living at 57 Bury New Road, Bolton. Norma was educated at Canon Slade School in Bolton and studied fine art at Durham University. After graduating, she trained as a teacher at the Institute of Education, now University College London, and taught art and design for some 27 years, including at Buckingham Gate Secondary School and then at Thomas Huxley College of Education. There she met Susan Hemmings, and they lived together as partners in Muswell Hill, North London. In 1973 Norma became head of art at Trent Park Teacher Training College, now Middlesex University, when it was given degree-awarding powers. On her retirement in 1983, Norma moved to Suffolk and was a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 16 High Green, Main Street, Leiston, Suffolk and exhibited in 1990 two paintings, 'In the Pink Room' and 'Evening Tide'. Norma worked in pencil, ink, watercolour, oils, pastels, etchings, engravings and was a member of the Sudbourne Park Printmakers and exhibited in London and, at Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh from Windswift, 26 Westward Ho, Leiston, Suffolk in 2007, 'Nine Above Sea Level' and is the author of 'Drawing' (1981). Norma Constance Pitfield had a son Francis (1955-2015) and in the last two year of her life suffered from dementia and moved into a care home in Aldeburgh where she died on 24 April 2020.
