McKECHNIE, Christine

As Christine McGibbon, she was born at Bursledon, Hamble, Hampshire on 7 January 1943, daughter of Douglas McGibbon (24 February 1919-25 October 2002) and his wife Anita Amelia Rosina née Parker (9 June 1920-8 June 1989), who married at Hamble in 1941. Christine studied at Southampton School of Art under James Sellars (1927-2000), and in the early 1960s at Kingston College of Art, gaining a National Design Diploma. She married at Ealing in 1963, Ian James McKechnie and they had a son and a daughter, and she paints under the name of Christine McKechnie. In 1968, when her oil paints were held up by a dock strike, she started making collages using bold decorative papers, including foil among many others, but now uses exclusively hand-painted Ingres and cartridge paper. This is cut, applied, and layered, employing many hundreds of pieces to produce her pictures which include Suffolk landscapes, pieces depicting her garden or nearby, or works inspired by places she has visited. She works from her studio at Cornerways, Southolt, Eye, Suffolk where she gives demonstrations and lectures on watercolour collage. A regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Shows and received an Art Special Award in 1983, also showing at the Royal College of Art; Chelsea Arts Club; Thompson's Gallery and elsewhere and a regular contributor to both ‘The Artist’ and ‘Leisure Painter’. Her work is on show at Suffolk Open Studios and Artworks and Blackthorpe Barn, Roughham, Bury St Edmund's; Sentinel Gallery, Wivenhoe and elsewhere.
