CARDEN, Andrew
Andrew Carden was born on 4 August 1910, son of Lt Col John Carden (13 May 1870-10 August 1915) and his wife Susan Ellen Wake (1879-26 April 1961), second daughter of Drury Wake of Pitsford House, Northamptonshire, who married at St Barnabus Church, Pimlico, London on 25 October 1909, Lt Col Carden was killed in action during the First World War. Andrew was educated at Stowe School, Buckingham and in 1934, graduated with an Architects' Association Diploma and in 1935 registered as an Associate of the Royal institute of British Architects. During the Second World War, a Major in the Royal Engineers, and after the war a founding partner with Walter Emil Godfrey (1913-1982) in architects Carden & Godfrey who designed Westminster School, Ashridge College, Worcester College, and Fishbourne Roman Palace. He married, firstly at Chelsea on 19 June 1937, Florence Katherine Hugo Cross (17 April 1911-3 May 1970) and secondly on 18 April 1973, Elizabeth Knapman, daughter of John Knapman and in 1976 they were living at Crodon's Barn, Woodham Mortimer, Essex. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and exhibited at the Chelmer Art Club in April 1946 an oil of an Indian lady in a sari and was also a Friend at the Ipswich Art Club, exhibiting from 18 Marine Parade, Dovercourt, Essex in 1990, two paintings, a portrait 'Young Girl' and 'Corner of Greenhouse'. Carden was co-author of 'World Architecture' (1964). Andrew Carden died at Dovercourt on 4 July 1996, leaving two sons by his first wife, Vanessa Hugo Carden (16 November 1946-31 May 2003) and Andrew Murray Hugo Carden (born 2 March 1948).
