David V. Thomas was born at Ipswich in 1963, son of Michael V. Thomas and his wife Penelope J. née Hogg, who married in Surrey in 1961, his family moved to Felixstowe shortly after he was born. David was educated at Felixstowe Grammar School, now Deben High School, where his art teacher, a Mrs Helling, was the person who first inspired him to take art seriously. David then studied at Ipswich Art School and, after the foundation course, went on to do graphics and enrolled in a new 3-D course which led to the Wolsey Theatre workshop. When the original Wolsey Theatre closed, he worked as a postman for a while before working at a firm in Beccles who provided signs and sets for theme parks. Although David has painted all his life, he is better known as a set designer and scenery painter, working at the Mercury Theatre, the original Wolsey Theatre and at Hornchurch, Essex. Although he enjoys visits to Cornwall and Devon on painting expeditions, most of his work is inspired by the farmland and the coastline of East Suffolk. A member of the Ipswich Art Society and exhibited from 17 Roseberry Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk in 1990, two pictures 'Black Backed Gull at Felixstowe' and 'An Oak in Gulpher Road'. He moved to Woodbridge in 1992 when he bought his cottage in Kingston Road and returned to work with the New Wolsey Theatre and Eastern Angles.
