THOMAS, Gill

As Gillian Emmett, she was born in the Uxbridge area in 1938, daughter of Leslie Thomas Stephen Emmett (21 June 1904-13 March 1986), a bank clerk, and his wife Mary Ethel née Halliday (28 March 1908-1978), who married at Maidenhead, Berkshire in 1935 and in 1939 were living at 42 Torrington Road, Ruislip. Gill, as she is known, studied illustration and graphic design at Birmingham School of Art 1954-1956 and worked as a graphic artist in advertising and as an illustrator for a variety of women’s magazines in London. She married at Hampstead in 1956, artist Raymond Gerald Thomas and after a career in primary education, about 1996 she and her husband retired to Suffolk and studied at Suffolk School of Arts, University of East Anglia, where she specialised in portraiture, gaining her B.A. (hons) in 2009. In 2004 she commenced a project to paint portraits of friends and colleagues within Suffolk’s artistic community, which included Lindsay Harris and detailed pen and water colour drawings of their studio space, which were exhibited at Peter Pears Gallery in Aldeburgh, Suffolk in 2014. A Life Member, and on the Committee, of the Ipswich Art Society and exhibited from 107 Henslow Road, Ipswich in 2006, an oil painting 'Paul Richardson, sculptor' and is currently a champion of the Ipswich Art Society's Anna Airy Award for young talent. She has continued producing illustrative work and portraiture, and paints regularly at Hugh Webster’s Boatshed Studio at Felixstowe Ferry.
