Maryanne Nicholls

As Mary-Anne Patricia Groom, she was born at Aldershot, Hampshire on 16 March 1955, daughter of John Patrick Groom (9 March 1929-) and his wife Jane Mary née Miskelly (10 July 1924-), who married at Taunton, Somerset in 1951. In 1957 her mother Jane and her two daughters, Susan Jane (born 25 February 1942) and Mary-Anne travelled to Singapore. Mary-Anne married at Kensington, London in 1983, Mark William Nicholls and paints under the name of Maryanne Nicholls. Maryanne graduated with a First-Class honour's degree from Suffolk College, now the University of Suffolk, in 1998 and proceeded to Norwich School of Art to complete her master's in fine Art. She studied with Glen Sujo (born 1952) at the Prince of Wales drawing School in London for several years, drawing students from the Laban School of Dance where the models are in constant motion and so the drawings must be very immediate with no time to consider, rework or contrive. Her figure drawings express her interest in trying to capture movement, and whose main preoccupation for many years has been the creation of large sculptural pieces for gardens and parklands. The sculptures explore pre-classical and classical cultures often in the guise of vessels or the human figure, using pared down forms set within the landscape. Maryanne uses the figure drawings both to inform her sculpture but also as an independent practice. The flower drawings are a response to the landscape and plants in the garden of her home and studio at High Hall, Nettlestead, near Ipswich. She has had solo exhibitions at Piers Feetham Gallery, London and also exhibited at Piers Feetham at Aldeburgh, Suffolk; Strand Gallery, Aldeburgh; Bury Art Gallery, Bury St Edmund's; Artworks, Bury St Edmund's; The Big Shed, Iken, Suffolk; ArtParks International, Guernsey; Norwich School of Art & Design; Wingfield Arts Centre, Suffolk; Graham & Oldham Gallery, Ipswich; Cobbold & Judd Gallery; International Art Fair, Royal College of Art; Art in and out of the Garden, Cambridge and many other venues.
