PLEDGER, Winifred

1903 - 1979

As Winifred Deeks, she was born at Whitechapel, London on 5 February 1903, daughter of Francis Charles Deeks (11 June 1868-1943), a licensed victualler and shopkeeper, and his wife Harriet Ellen née Hupton (8 October 1861-9 February 1942), who married at Edmonton, London in 1898 and in 1939 were living at 55 High Road, Redbridge, Surrey. Winifred married at West Ham, London in 1926, Gordon Horace Saville Pledger (17 September 1902-4 June 1966), a company director in wholesale foods, and she painted under the name of Winifred Pledger. A mature student at Southend School of Art and her work consists of large poppies and sunflowers but her speciality are her paintings of boats. Winifred has exhibited widely including the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Society of British Artists, and locally at Beecroft Galleries, Southend; Assembly House, Norwich and at Halesworth and Walberswick. She lived at The Homestead, Hoxne, Suffolk. Winifred Pledger was of Hillside, 42 Low Street, Hoxne, Suffolk when she died at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital on 1 September 1979.
