NICHOLLS, Guy

1925 - 1988

William Guy Nicholls was born at Farnham, Surrey on 3 May 1925, son of Guy Sydney Nicholls (2 June 1891-12 January 1970), a civil engineer, and his wife Beryl Alice née Wright (21 February 1897-7 March 1976), who married at Norwich in 1920 and in 1921 were living at 11 Church Hill, Leamington, Warwickshire with their newly born daughter Peggy Beryl, who was born in London, and by 1939 they were living at 28 Beechcroft Road, Bushey, Hertfordshire. Guy, as he was known, studied at the Regent Street and Chelsea Schools of Art and was an illustrator and graphic designer. He married Esher Parish Church, Surrey on 26 March 1955, book illustrator Susan Patricia Nichol, daughter of C W Nichol of North Lodge, Esher, and they had four children, Matthew (born 1958), Lisa (born 1959), Hannah (born 1963) and Katheryn (born 1965). Guy was a director of TDL, advertising & design consultants, 80-92 Mansell Street, London, E1. In the early 1960s he went as a part-time lecturer in graphic design at Ipswich School of Art at High Street, Ipswich and in 1963, working under the name of Guy Nicholls, began painting again and in 1964 had a major exhibition at Gallery Thirteen, Aldeburgh, Suffolk which was followed by another in London in 1965. In 1964 the German art magazine 'Gebrauchsgraphik' devoted an extensive article on his work and in 1966 his studio was at 13 Market Cross, Aldeburgh, Suffolk. William Guy Nicholls died in France in 1988.
