Sgt. Maj. Douglas Farthing

Born in North Suffolk in 1967, son of Douglas R. Farthing and his wife Jennifer D. née Davies, who married in the Lothingland district of Suffolk in 1966. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the army, learning his soldiering in Northern Ireland during the late 1980s and early 1990s and was amongst one of the first British troops to enter the Afghan capital in 2002 and is accredited with the Armed Forces Art Society and the International Society of War Artists. He left the regular army in 2007 with the rank of Sgt.Maj. and set up as an artist. He joined the Warehouse Studio in Lowestoft where he met several well know and influential local artists who helped him with his techniques. His war art was born in the trenches and his perspective is not just with that of an artist but also that of a soldier and his work shows the reality, energy and anticipation of the soldier in the theatre of operations. He married in the Waveney district of Suffolk in 1991, Julia A. Booker and lives at Lowestoft, Suffolk and his paintings can be seen at Mandell's Gallery, Norwich.
