REEDER, Carolyn

1940 - 2018

As Carolyn Elizabeth Hadley, she was born at Portsmouth, Hampshire in July 1940, daughter of Jack Edwin Hadley (1 March 1902-20 September 1980), an insurance manager, and his wife Beatrice Elizabeth née Self (21 May 1907-7 January 1988), who married at Brighton in 1931 and in 1939 were living at 13 Hereford Road, Portsmouth. Carolyn married in the Samford district of Suffolk in 1961, Michael George Reeder (16 July 1936-14 November 2015) and worked under the name of Carolyn Reeder. Carolyn studied at Lowestoft School of Arts and Crafts and the Open College of Arts and gained her B.A. (hons) degree and with over 50 years of experience, painted mostly in acrylic and collage in a range of styles from traditional to abstract but recent work was mostly acrylics on canvas in a bold style. Carolyn also did hand-built sculptural forms in stoneware and raku ceramics and kiln fused glass she was also a leading member of the Norfolk and Suffolk Weavers Guild and taught at Lowestoft College for many years. Her work is shown by Lowestoft Arts Centre; Ferini Art Gallery, Pakefield, Lowestoft and Guild Gallery, Victoria Arcade, Great Yarmouth. In 1971 she moved to Lowestoft and was the founder and driving force behind the Lowestoft Arts Centre that opened in 2000 and, upon retirement, turned her opticians practice into Art Spaces, a facility enjoyed by many artists as a meeting place for craft groups and life-drawing classes. Carolyn Elizabeth Leeder had a studio at Warren Anne, Flixton Marsh Lane, Blundeston, Suffolk and she died at James Paget University Hospital on 20 May 2018.
