Andrew J. Pitt was born at Maldon, Essex in 1947, son of Douglas Gordon Pitt (25 November 1920-15 March 2017), engineer's valve maker, and his wife Edna née Carmichael, who married at Hull, Yorkshire in 1946. Andrew was educated at the Gilberd School, Colchester, Essex and studied at St Andrew's University. He has been painting landscapes since the age of 11 and for many years painted exclusively in watercolour, concentrating on East Anglian landscapes and in particular, marine scenes. Now a professional artist and paints with equal facility in both watercolour and oil and has extended his range of subject matter. Although he has remained a figurative artist, his oils exploit the full potential of the texture of the paint and his aim remains to get a painterly image, which captures the essence of the subject. Well known for his loose, fresh approach to watercolour and the simplicity of his style has made him much in demand as a tutor in this medium, and Andrew tutors at residential painting courses at Flatford Mill, Dedham Hall; Watershed Studio in St Osyth, Essex and at Aldeburgh Art Group. A member of the Southwold Art Circle and has had many solo exhibitions since 1980 and contributed to numerous mixed shows and his work is exhibited at The Serena Hall Gallery in Southwold, Suffolk. His work is included in 'The Encyclopaedia of Watercolour Landscapes' and is a regular contributor to the 'Leisure Painter' magazine. Andrew's pictures are in many private collections in Britain as well as Canada, Holland, North America, New Zealand, Slovakia and Australia. He has produced a CD 'Watercolour: Pure and Simple' which is available directly from him at his studio at Reydon, Southwold, Suffolk. He donated to the Westhall Secret Postcard Auction in 2013 a watercolour 'Preparing a Nest - Great Tit'.
