MALLIN, Muriel

1925 - 2002

As Muriel Grace George, she was born at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, U.S.A. on 18 February 1925, daughter of Harold George (4 April 1895-6 May 1973), a plasterer, who was born in Ipswich, Suffolk and his Irish born wife Elsie Ruth née Adams (16 January 1899-1943) who returned to the UK in 1931 and in 1939 were living at 95 Goudhurst Road, Bromley, Kent. Muriel won a scholarship to Woolwich School of Art and on her mother's death in 1943 she left home and studied at the Central School of Art, training as an illustrator under the guidance of artist Francis John Minton (1917–1957). Through the Anglo-French School of Art, London, in 1947 she met Tom Mallin whom she married at Paddington, London in 1949, and are the parents of two sons including artist Rupert Mallin (born 1953). In 1955, together with their sons, they moved to The Oak, 10 Snow Hill, Clare in Suffolk. Muriel turned away from illustration and in the 1960s took up landscape painting whilst also teaching part-time. Her husband died at Clare in 1977 and in 1988 she moved from Clare to 402 London Road South, Lowestoft, also in Suffolk from where she was a member and an exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle in 1994. Muriel Grace Mallin died at Lowestoft on 30 June 2002. She signed her paintings either Muriel George; Muriel Mallin or initials MGM. There is a 1973 oil painting by Sir Alfred Munnings entitled 'Muriel George (Mrs Mallin) Woodland, Clare, Suffolk'.
