John Nichol

John Thomas Nichol was born at Redruth, Cornwall in 1943, son of Thomas Nichol and his wife Lily Amelia née Howe (6 December 1906-2004), who married at St Pancras, London in 1932. As a youngster John moved to London and after various jobs, including gardener, chef & labourer, he joined the Merchant Navy for four years and sailed the world. On his return to England, he studied at Epsom & Ewell School of Art where he obtained a First-Class Fine Art Diploma in 1969. In 1972 he moved to Suffolk where he has continued to paint and exhibit his work and was artist in residence at Kentwell Hall and at Gainsborough House, Sudbury 1980-1982. John had his studio at 62 Melford Road, Sudbury, Suffolk and has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Show; Folkes-Miller, Fine Art; Hunter Gallery, Bury St Edmund's; Caxton Gallery, Frinton-on-Sea, Essex; One to One Gallery Felixstowe; Bury St Edmund's Art Gallery and has had solo shows at Reunion Gallery, Felixstowe. John has produced paintings for high profile patrons including eight paintings for the King of Jordan for the Royal Palace Aquabaas and for King Saud of Saudi Arabia and has had commissions from Richard Stone, Royal portrait painter and the BBC.
