ALLAN, Vernon

1861 - ?

Born at Walworth, Surrey in 1861, son of James Benjamin Allan, an artist, and his wife Louisa née Lee, who married at Lambeth in 1859. In 1871, 36 year old James was living at Manor Villas, Mortlake, Surrey with his 35 year old wife and nine children, including 9 year old Vernon. In 1881, Vernon was a 19 year old artist lodging at 23 Ockendon Road, Islington, London, the home of Annie Ramus and her family and he married on the Isle of Wight in 1885 Sarah Elizabeth Smith and moved to Bridge House, Bridge Street, Caversham, Surrey. At Bridge House in 1891 but shortly afterwards moved to Lowestoft, Suffolk and noted in Kelly’s 'Directory of Suffolk' 1892 as an artist at 87 Albert Street, Lowestoft. By 1901 a 38 year old professional artist at 2 Divinity Road, Cowley, Oxford with his 45 year old wife and children, Vera 9, born Caversham, Violet 8, born Lowestoft and son Abury 6, born Oxford (the ages are somewhat incorrectly written). In 1911, Sarah ‘married’ and four children were still at Divinity Road, but her husband Vernon is missing. He may have emigrated to Queensland, Australia.
