BENNEY, Paul Sallis

Paul Sallis Benney was born at Kensington, London on 30 May 1959, son of Adrian Gerald Sallis Benney (21 April 1930–26 June 2008), a silversmith, and his wife Janet née Edwards (10 November 1936-7 April 2013), who married at Basingstoke, Hampshire in 1957, he is a grandson of artist Ernest Sallis Benney (1894-1966). Paul moved to New York in 1982 and was member of the New York downtown Neo-Expressionist group in the 1980s. He was first taken by New York's P.P.O.W. Gallery in 1984 where he created immense monochromatic painting depicting mysterious dream imagery with surfaces built up of layers feather twigs, dirt, and gel. He returned to London in 1988 and married in the Reading district in 1990, Denise R. Stephens. Paul Benney is an established portrait artist whose work was included in the BP Portrait Award Exhibition in 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2008, and was shortlisted in 1997 and 1999. His work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the National Gallery, Canberra and the National Portrait Gallery, London. Somerset House resident artist where he exhibited ‘Night Paintings’ a collection of his past and present work in the Deadhouse space, a series of atmospheric chambers underneath the fountain courtyard. A London based artist who lives in a rambling farmhouse at Laxfield, Suffolk.
