Born at Ipswich in 1858, third of the five sons of James Gaul (1828-1921), an engineer, and his wife Martha née Wood, who married at Ipswich in 1854. In 1861, a 2 year old living at 1 Baker’s Gardens [Street], Ipswich with his parents, 32 year old James, a machinist, and 25 year old Martha, and three siblings, Robert James 5, William Archer 4 and newly born Alfred Donald, the whole family born at Ipswich. In 1891, a 32 year old artist in oils, living at 31 Christchurch Street, Ipswich with his parents, 62 year old James, now described as an artist, and 54 year old Martha. In 1901 still living at Christchurch Street when James was ‘living on own means’ and young John Thomas was a 42 year old art dealer in pictures and they were still there ten years later with John still a picture dealer. Father James died at Ipswich in 1912, aged 83 and John Thomas died, unmarried, at Norwich in 1934, aged 75. Father James Gaul is only noticed as an artist in the 1891 census, otherwise as an engineer or foundry worker, and was probably an error.
