Patrick George

Patrick Herbert George was born at Wilmslow, Cheshire on 28 July 1923, son of Alfred Herbert George (17 February 1876-14 April 1956), a merchant turned farmer, and his wife Nora Richards (20 February 1894-1984), only daughter of the late George Richards of West Didsbury, who married at Christ Church, West Didsbury Manchester on 5 February 1916. Patrick was a student at Downs Preparatory School, Herefordshire, the Quaker school for Malvern College, where artist Maurice Feild (1905-1988) taught him. As an Andrew Grant Scholar, Patrick studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1941-1942 and after war service with the Royal Navy 1942-1946, continued his studies at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts 1946-1949 under [Sir] William Coldstream (1908-1987) and at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1949. His teaching career then began and continued for forty years, retiring from the position of director of Slade in 1988. A member of the Arts Council and Member of Eastern Arts and Slade Professor 1985-1988 and a member of panel creating and implementing the Coldstream reports I and II. He exhibited at Cobbold & Judd and had a solo exhibition at Gainsborough's House Gallery, Sudbury, Suffolk in 1975, with group exhibitions at Eight Figurative Painters, Mellon Center for British Art; Yale and LA Louver Galleries, Los Angeles 1981; Tate Gallery, London 1983; Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter 1984 and elsewhere and had a long-standing relationship with gallery Browse & Darby in Cork Street, London. His work can be found in many public collections including Arts Council, Norwich Castle Museums and Art Galleries, National Portrait Gallery and Tate Gallery, London. He married at Lambeth, London in 1955, June Griffith by whom he had four daughters. When not working on portraits at 33 Moreton Terrace, London, he lived and worked at 'Grandfathers', Great Saxham, near Bury St Edmund’s, Suffolk and continued to be absorbed by painting Suffolk scenes around his home. Patrick Herbert George died on 23 April 2016.
