ROSE, Vernon

1930 - 2017

Vernon Parker Rose was born at Salford, Manchester on 13 May 1930, son of William Edward Rose (10 April 1889-), head carder cotton spinner, and his wife Edith Annie née Parker (22 September 1898-), who married at Prestwich, Lancashire in 1924, and in 1939 were living at 178 Manchester Road, Audenshaw, Lancashire. Vernon attended Audenshaw grammar school and at Manchester College of Art, his speciality was sculpture, and in late 1953 he took up residence at St Ives, Cornwall. He married firstly at Paddington, London in 1954, Sheila D. Hardy and in the 1960s was a painter, sculptor and folk singer living in Cornwall. He moved to Suffolk in 1981 and married secondly in the Deben district of Suffolk in 1998, Janet A. Rayner and they went to live at 57 Chediston Street, Halesworth, Suffolk. Vernon’s output of paintings was prolific and continued even after he was registered blind in 2004 because of macular degeneration. In his own words “I then ignored such restricting trivialities as perspective, relative size and viewpoint.” In 2009 he exhibited at the Market House Gallery in Marazion, Cornwall in a four-man show 'Sons of Guns' with one of his old artist friends, Anthony Nicol [Tony 'Doc'] Shiels (born 1938). Described as an artist of Halesworth when one his pictures 'Blue Fishing Boat' was sold in aid of charity at Westhall Secret Postcard Auction in 2013 for £70. Vernon Parker Rose died on 19 October 2017, being survived by his wife Jan.

His wife, as Jan Rose, was also described as an artist when a painting by her 'Falling Lights' was sold at Westhall Secret Postcard Auction in 2013.
