HURR, Ezekial John

1874 - 1916

Ezekial John Hurr, was born at Southwold, Suffolk on 22 November and baptised on 27 December 1874, eldest son of Philip John Hurr (1851-1936), a fisherman, and his wife Jane Eliza Ann née Strutt (1853-1933), who married at Southwold in 1874. In 1881, a 6 year old scholar, living at Victoria Street, Southwold with his parents, 29 year old Philip, born Southwold and 28 year old Jane, born Walberswick, and his three sibling brothers, William 4, George 3 and Francis 1, all Southwold born. He married at Southwold in 1899, Martha Florence Goll (or Yoll 1869-1944), born at Walsingham, Norfolk, who kept a boarding house at Corporation Road, Southwold. Ezekial was a self-taught artist and also a fisherman and in 1901, a 26 year old married engineer, aboard the fishing boat 270LJ then in Penzanze Docks. He died whilst serving as an engineman in the Royal Navy, aboard British Naval trawler H.M. Kaphreda, which was sunk by a mine off Lowestoft on 8 June 1916. Several other local men were also killed.
