Robert Shimmon Glover

Born at Girthon, Kirkcudbrighshire, Scotland on 20 September 1869, third of the four sons of Henry Douglas Glover (1813-1896), solicitor and bank agent, and his wife Jane née Payne (1838-1923). In 1871, a 1 year old living at High Street, Girthon with his parents 38 year old Henry and 33 year old Jane and two elder brothers. Articled to a solicitor in Edinburgh whilst boarding at Marchmont Road, Edinburgh. He married at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1896, Jane Annie Saunders and in 1901 a 31 year old solicitor & bank agent living at High Street, Girthon with his 34 year old wife Jane, born Rerwick, Kirkcudbrightshire. His wife died at Gatehouse, Girthon on 18 June 1911 and he married secondly at U. F. Church, Auchencairn on 23 September 1915, Caroline Thomson from Fife. Previously a Captain in Galloway Rifles & Territorial Force, he was mobilised on 4 August 1914 into the 5th King’s Own Scottish Borderers serving during the First World War rising to the rank of major. He exhibited landscape paintings at the Royal Academy in 1923 from Blyth House, Southwold, Suffolk, probably a holiday retreat. A bank agent, solicitor, and town clerk, he died on 25 December 1932, aged 62 and his gravestone is in Anworth churchyard, Girthon.
